Will Coulthard Explodes for 39, Not Enough as McMaster Rolls to 2-0 in New Year
Hamilton, ON- After a win on the road, the McMaster Marauders were looking to go 2-0 in 2013 as they hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks. With a strong start, and a strong finish the Marauders were able to do just that coming away with a 93-84 victory over the Golden Hawks.
MAC would open the game strong, blowing open a 26-10 lead after the first quarter. However, Laurier without their leading scorer in Max Allin, it was left up to sophomore guard Will Coulthard (16 pts at half), who took the Golden Hawks on his back to spearhead a 30 pt second quarter that would see them down 43-40 going into the locker room.
“Our issue at times is that we can slip fundamentally on the defensive end. When young guys see a big lead, they think ‘I think I can approach the second casually’ That’s why Scott Laws is great. He’s experienced enough to know that the game should be played a certain way regardless of circumstances and he always defends,” explained McMaster Head Coach Amos Connolly.
At the half, Laurier was shooting 40 percent from the field and held McMaster to just 28 percent shooting.
Going into the second half, Coulthard would use the momentum and continue his attack, getting to the foul line and converting on every chance he had. This would give Laurier a 78-77 lead heading to the final stanza.
McMaster came out in the fourth with great intensity, getting big shots and great play from Nathan McCarthy (10 pts 5 rbs), Taylor Black (14 pts 14 rbs), and Aaron Redpath (23 pts 9 rbs).
Although Laurier would strike again late and get it within four, they just could not get over the foul hump as late free throws sealed the victory for McMaster.
The Marauders had a very balanced game on the offensive end with six players in double figures, Redpath leading the way, and Black coming up with a double-double. Freshman Rohan Boney (12 pts 8 rbs) giving the Marauders his athleticism and intensity off the bench.
The Marauders will be in action again January 9th, as they head to Guelph to face the 3-6 Guelph Gryphons.
