AJ Lawson A.K.A Captain Clutch is Mic’D UP with North Pole Hoops!

There isn’t much more to say that hasn’t already been said about the No. 1 prospect in the 2019 class. Lawson stands at 6’7 and has proven through the years with a consistent body of work why he’s the top player in the country.

The GTA Prep guard had a great showing at the National Preparatory Association Battle in the Capital in Nov. where he averaged 18.6 points, 4.6 assists and 5 rebounds in three games.

Lawson’s explosiveness and athleticism allows him to be a pest defensively and also break out quick in transition and finish way above the rim.

Kentucky Visit

Lawson made an unofficial visit to the University of Kentucky this past weekend and got to see the Wildcats take on Virginia Tech.

Lawson took in two fellow Canadians in Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander battle against each other in a hard fought Kentucky win.

Even though Kentucky missed out on RJ Barrett, Coach Cal is determined to keep the Canadian pipeline open. The Wildcats have have been home for many great Canadian players over the years including Jamal Murray, Trey Lyles and Kyle Wiltjer.

Will AJ Lawson be next?

National recruiting scout, Tariq Sbiet flew down to Kentucky to also take in the highly anticipated game and he was able to catch up with Lawson about his visit and his recruitment so far.

Tariq Sbiet: How was your trip to UK (University of Kentucky)? Share your experience with me.

AJ Lawson: My trip to UK was an amazing experience because not only was it my first unofficial visit but it was my first time watching a big college game in person. It was amazing seeing the atmosphere and while I was watching the game vs Virginia Tech, I kept picturing myself playing in a big arena and doing work. It was fun watching the players practice and seeing how hard they go. Their practice gym is right beside the player dorms and I like that it’s so close. I also really liked their facilities. Overall, it was a good experience and I enjoyed my time there.

Who has been recruiting you the hardest?

I would say Oregon, Baylor, SMU, Vanderbilt and New Mexico have been recruiting me the hardest. They all check in with me daily/weekly and always check up on my family and I.

What do you look for in a school?

What I look for in a school is whether it feels like home or not. If they have the same plan for me to get to where I need to get to, which is the NBA.

Any early favourites?

I don’t have any favourites yet, but I like when the coaches keep in contact with me.

How has your season been going so far with GTA Prep? What are you goals for this year?

My season with GTA Prep has been pretty good so far, other than my little ankle tweaks. I feel I have improved tremendously from last year and i’m getting stronger and faster while my skills are improving too. I feel this year my team can do damage because we gel well together and we have good chemistry. I’m planning on leading my team to a NPA championship and to get first team All-Star in the league. If there’s a MVP of the league, i’m definitely striving for that. Right now my team is 4-1 in the NPA and I feel like we can beat every team in the league.
