Scrubb Brothers Power Carleton to First Season Victory over Windsor Lancers
OTTAWA, ON – The Carleton Ravens opened their season strong with a controlling victory over the Windsor Lancers, 95-74.
Taking to the court minutes after Carleton’s Women’s Basketball Team upset the 3-time defending CIS Champion Lancers, the Men’s team looked to vindicate their counterpart’s loss.
The #1 CIS Ranked Ravens and #6 Lancers were set for battle right off of the jump ball, with both teams applying agonizing pressure.
Tommy Scrubb made a statement with a big slam-dunk to open the game. The Ravens’ strong defensive presence caused the Lancer guards trouble, forcing many turnovers. Superb outside shooting from Tommy Scrubb and other Ravens (Hinz, Raso) led CU to a 23-16 lead in the first quarter.
The Lancers seemed uncomfortable in the second frame, allowing Carleton a 12-point scoring steak. After a few rough fouls by the Lancers, Coach Smart was seen to be visibly upset by the scorer’s table, concerned over potential injuries early in the year. The Ravens dominated the boards (23-14) resulting in a 20 point lead (47-27) at the end of the first half.
Windsor Coach, Chris Oliver calmed his team down to play some better basketball in the third. Fifth year guard, Enrico Diloreto drew a handful of fouls to have a strong scoring quarter. Though the Lancers improved their play, the Ravens maintained their lead, finishing the quarter with a score of 71-51.
Carleton spread the scoring around in the fourth quarter including Connor Wood, Clinton Springer-Williams and Jean Pierre-Charles. The Ravens won the game 88-65 with Tommy Scrubb having the standout performance of the night with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Despite the loss, Lancers Lien Phillip had an impressive game, playing efficiently on both ends of the floor (20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals).
The Windsor Lancers travel across town to the University of Ottawa to play the Gees Gees tomorrow night at 8 PM at Montpetit Hall. The Carleton Ravens host the Western University Mustangs tomorrow evening at 8 PM.
