(TORONTO, ONTARIO) – Canada Basketball has announced the training camp roster for the Senior Men’s National Team (SMNT), as well as the summer competition schedule and staff. The summer schedule for the “Road Warriors” includes the 2011 Jack Donohue International Classic (JDIC), which will feature two games against Belgium on August 13 at Ryerson University in Toronto and August 14 at McMaster University in Hamilton. Tickets for this event are only $10 and more information can be found at http://www.basketball.ca

The SMNT’s competition schedule will conclude with the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship in Mar del Plata, Argentina from August 30 – September 11. The competition is the qualifying tournament for the FIBA Americas zone for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England. The top two finishers of the tournament will qualify for the Olympics; while the teams that finish third to fifth will participate in a secondary qualifying tournament, which will be held July 2 – 8, 2012.

The training camp roster is an impressive list of 17 players, which features professionals from all over the world. It is highlighted by eight athletes from last summer’s team including the NBA’s Joel Anthony (Montreal, QC). Anthony recently completed his fourth season in the NBA, all of which playing for the Miami Heat. This season, as the starting centre, he helped the Heat to the NBA Finals, where they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in six games. This will be Anthony’s fifth season with Canada’s National Team Program.

Adding more talent from the NBA is Andy Rautins (Syracuse, NY) who spent his rookie season with the New York Knicks. Also attending camp from last year’s team are European professionals Jermaine Anderson (Toronto, ON), Denham Brown (Toronto, ON), Levon Kendall (Vancouver, BC), Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, ON), and Jevohn Shepherd (Toronto, ON). Shepherd spent most of the 2010 – 2011 season playing for Osnabrueck in Germany, where he won the Bundesliga Pro A Player of the Year Award. Rounding out the returning players is Gonzaga University’s Kelly Olynyk (Kamloops, BC).

National Team veterans, Carl English (St. John’s NL) and Jesse Young (Peterborough, ON) will also be attending camp after both were sidelined from the national team due to injury last summer. In the 2010 – 2011 season, English was enjoying his best professional season to date in Spain before it was cut short due to injury. In January, English was named the player of the month in the ACB, Spain’s top pro league.

The first phase will begin with training camp on July 15 at Ryerson University in Toronto. This phase concludes with a European tour, where the SMNT will play exhibition games in France, Italy and the Czech Republic.

The second phase will resume at Ryerson University in August and will include the 2011 JDIC, where the SMNT will take on Belgium on home soil. They will then travel to Brazil to play Brazil, Puerto Rico, and the Domincan Republic in the Tuto Marchand Cup, then to Argentina for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship.
