Serena Williams, Toronto Tempo Building Excitement for Canadian Women’s Basketball

Canadian basketball is entering a new era, and much of the buzz is centered around the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first franchise outside of the United States. With their official debut set for the 2026 season, the Tempo are already generating momentum—thanks in large part to a groundbreaking ownership group that includes tennis legend Serena Williams.

Serena Williams Joins the Movement

In March 2025, Serena Williams was announced as a co-owner of the Tempo, instantly elevating the team’s visibility. Known globally not just for her dominance in tennis but also for her cultural influence and business acumen, Williams brings a level of star power rarely seen in women’s professional sports.

Her involvement goes beyond just investment—Williams is expected to play a role in shaping the team’s branding, merchandise, and fan engagement strategy, giving the Tempo a unique edge as they build their identity.

Connecting with Fans Early

Even before playing a single game, the Tempo have prioritized building a relationship with fans. In July 2025, the organization launched its official fan club, offering memberships for $50 CAD per year. Perks include exclusive merchandise, ticket opportunities, and special fan experiences—ensuring the Tempo already have a loyal base waiting for tip-off.

Toronto has proven its passion for basketball through the success of the Raptors, and the Tempo are poised to capture that same energy on the women’s side. With Serena Williams helping lead the charge, excitement is already spreading nationwide.

Building the Full Girls Basketball Pathway

This historic WNBA expansion comes at the same time as major growth in Canada’s girls basketball infrastructure. Last fall, North Pole Hoops launched the inaugural season of the Women’s National Prep Association (WNPA)—a first-of-its-kind platform giving Canadian prep athletes national exposure and competition. Now entering Year 2, the WNPA is stronger than ever and continues to set the standard for high-performance girls basketball in the country.

For the 2025–26 season, the ecosystem expands even further, giving athletes a complete development pathway:

WNPA (Women’s National Prep Association) – entering Year 2, providing national-level exposure and competition for the country’s top prep programs.

NPH Girls D1 Division – Canada’s elite platform for prep girls’ basketball.

NPH Girls D1 Junior Division – introducing a new level for younger prep talent, giving the next wave of players high-performance experience.

Grade 5–12 Girls Showcase League (Club Teams) – a grassroots-to-high school competition platform designed for club programs, allowing players to develop and gain exposure from the earliest stages.

Together, these platforms ensure that girls across Canada can clearly see the journey—from club basketball, to prep competition, into college scholarships, and ultimately toward the WNBA. With the Toronto Tempo on the horizon and Serena Williams adding global inspiration, the pathway has never been stronger.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As the Tempo prepare for their inaugural season, the combination of a global icon in Serena Williams, a hungry Canadian fanbase, and a complete national player pathway is setting the stage for something bigger than just basketball.

When the Toronto Tempo finally step onto the court in 2026, they won’t just be chasing wins—they’ll be inspiring a generation of Canadian girls to dream bigger, work harder, and see themselves in the future of the game.
