Aaron Redpath Drops 23 in Win Over Guelph, Rohan Boney Comes Up Big in Second Half
Guelph, ON —With another road game in front of them, the McMaster Marauders rolled to 3-0 in the new year (now 5-5) with a balanced 97-67 win over the Guelph Gryphons.
MAC got into the paint often and early throughout the entire game, as the drive and dish was working as easy as it was to dump it inside to the bigs.
The Gryphons Zach Angus (17 pts) and Dan McCarthy (11 pts) lead them in the first half, as McCarthy came out strong in the opening quarter, and scored nine of his final 11 points, which wasn’t to the delight of McMaster Head Coach Amos Connolly.
“The key was making Dan McCarthy’s life tougher – we didn’t play out our game plan on him initially and he scored early. We settled down and Scott and Rohan did a great job. At that point, we were getting stops and then Aaron warmed up and spread the score a little.”
As both teams came out for the second half, Angus went on a run of his own scoring 11 points in five minutes, causing the Marauders to call a timeout and make some adjustments.
That would trigger a spark into Aaron Redpath (21 pts) and the Marauders leading 76-44 going into the fourth. Redpath would get some help from his entire team with five players scoring in double figures for the second straight game. Freshman Rohan Boney (18 pts, 6 rbs) came off the bench again for Coach Connolly with a big game for the Marauders.
From start to finish MAC had control of the game, Guelph made a couple runs to try and cut the lead, but it wasn’t enough as the McMaster bench was emptied midway through the fourth. This was probably the most balanced attack on both ends that the Marauders have put together through the first three games of the new year.
Joe Rocca (13 pts, 7 rbs), Scott Laws (12 pts), and Taylor Black (10 pts, 6 rbs) were all solid contributors in the win. McMaster brought arguably their most consistent shooting game overall, as they hit 88 percent from the free throw line, 50 percent from long range, and 55 percent from the field.
McMaster will return to play Saturday January 12th as they host a 1-9 Western Mustangs. Guelph will take on Laurier next.
