Halifax, NS–The number one ranked team in Canada (Carleton Ravens), came into day one and flexed their muscle, taking  care of business over a resilient Acadia Axeman team.  The Ravens defeated the Acadia Axemen 82-68.

It was all Carleton in the first quarter.  Tyson Hinz went to work down low scoring 12 points in the opening frame.

Acadia was out performed throughout the opening frame and had a difficult job containing the high intensity from Carleton.  The Axemen were also unable to match the Ravens on the boards as they were out-rebounded 16-7 in the first ten minutes of the game.

Tyson Hinz talked about his quick start.

“We just had to come out, be the hunters and be the aggressors.  In a game like this we saw they had the aggressor mentality and it’s tough to play. We just had to keep coming, no matter what the score was up 10 or down 15, we just had to keep coming and keep attacking.”

In the second quarter, Hinz passed the scoring baton to Scrubb who managed to add 14 points to the fierce Carleton attack which started to regain its dominance in the later part of the quarter.  Scrubb went 4/7 from beyond the arc and gave the Ravens another scoring threat for Acadia to handle.

Acadia managed to find their feet offensively and strung together a nice quarter where they balanced the scoring attack among the starters while Owen Klassen re-energized the crowd with a powerful two handed jam!

The quick start Carleton had at the beginning of the game disappeared as the Axemen dug in defensively and held the Ravens to four points midway through the third quarter.  Freshman Tyler Scott came alive offensively and brought the crowd to its feet as he scored 11 points in the quarter.

As the quarter winded down, Phillip Scrubb hit a big three pointer, and on the very next possession Tyler Scott responded with a buzzer beating three pointer to put the crowd into a frenzy.  The Carleton Ravens held onto a slim 56-52 lead heading into the final quarter.

As the clock started to tick away, every possession became more and more valuable.  Scrubb continued his solid performance hitting another three to put the Ravens up by nine.  Jonathan Tull took control of the game for a short period scoring six points and helping close the gap to seven.

The Ravens would not let the Axemen come any closer. Elliot Thompson came alive in the clutch, hitting four three pointers and giving the Ravens a comfortable lead. Scrubb added another three making it five threes within a few minutes.  The Ravens had the answer from various players in crunch time, which deflated the violent Axeman.

The final score had Carleton defeating Acadia 82-68.

Phillip Scrubb spoke with NPH after the game.

“We knew they were gunna come out and play tough, they’ve got a lot of talent on their team and obviously Owen is pretty tough to stop inside but we had a pretty good game plan for him.”

With the victory, Carleton advances to the Championship Semi-final game against Fraser Valley.  Acadia will move to the consolation Semi-final to play Lakehead.
