OTTAWA,ON—Carleton returned to the court to jumpstart the new year at home in the Raven’s nest in their crisp white uniforms. From the beginning of the game, Carleton showed why they were a national powerhouse and performed like a well-oiled machine, rather than a team trying to shed the rust of 2010. Forward Tyson Hinz disagrees, “There was definitely a little rust out there, a couple of lapses defensively, sometimes we lost focus, maybe it was harder to react and play our game.”
It didn’t look that way tonight though as guard Mike Kenny ripped open the first quarter with three three-pointers, and Hinz heating up quickly with 20 first-half points. After a three-pointer by Phil Scrubb brought the lead to 34-18, Carleton would settle into comfort and “cruise” to a 43-29 lead at halftime.
The nature of this team is such that even the smallest lapse, the most minor mistake is screamingly burned into the minds of each and every Carleton player. The demand for success keeps this team a perfect 9-0 on the season, but what drives the Ravens is a tireless pursuit of athletic perfection. “It starts in practice,” said Hinz. “if we’re going to stay motivated all season it has to start in practice.”
Carleton simply looks like a veteran team that is seasoned by tireless preparation and grilled to perfection by a masterful head coach and basketball program. Ryerson gets few opportunities and fail to capitalize on the few chances they get, Carleton’s team defense is sound and will not be seriously tested on this night. Ryerson looks like a young team and Hinz was very reluctant to say anything negative about the 2-7 Rams, “Nothing to throw them under the bus, they’re a very good young team and they’ll be very good in a couple of years.”
At the end of the first half, Luke Staniscia, and Afeworki Gebrekerestos hit three-pointers in a sloppy and choppy final few minutes of the first half. Carleton opens the second half strong and never looks back after a Cole Hobin three-pointer. Carleton dominates on the boards as well 35-24 over the Rams including 12 from starting centre Aaron Chapman. After a set of back-to-back three pointers by Phil Scrubb and Cole Hobin, Carleton led 78-53. Almost all of the Ravens see the court, but it is Willy Manigat who puts in the dagger three-pointer late to seal a game that was long decided before the final buzzer sounded on a 89-64 Carleton win.
