Nirra Fields pushes Canada into Semis

Canada battles through a slow start to comfortably defeat Mexico 65-39 to remain perfect and book a spot in the Semi-Finals of the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup.

The Women’s national team was led by Nirra Fields who scored a game high 13 points on perfect shooting. Fields went 4/4 from the field including knocking down two shots from downtown.

Team captain, Miranda Ayim added eight points, all in the paint, while Jamie Scott came off the bench and provided a huge spark scoring all of her eight points in the second quarter.

Canada led throughout the game despite a poor first half performance in which they only scored 28 points.

Scott came into the game and made an immediate impact knocking down a pair of threes to give Canada a 12 point lead. However, an offensive drought at the end of the half led to Mexico cutting the lead back down to 28-20 at halftime.

Starting point guard, Shay Colley said, “we were just offensively out of sync, we weren’t playing together and defensively we were slow. Mexico came out strong and we had to turn it up a little bit more and that’s what we did in the third quarter.”

The women certainly got into a second gear and completely dominated the second half.

Fields continued her impressive shooting day throughout the rest of the game.

Kia Nurse didn’t have a memorable performance but she was able to rub salt on Mexico’s wounds with a buzzer beating three pointer at the end of the third quarter.

Canada continued to cruise in the fourth and close the game out strong. They outscored Mexico 37-19 in the second half.
