Canadian Senior National Team Trims Roster to 14 En Route to Brazil

TORONTO, ON– The Senior Men’s National Team (SMNT) has cut the roster down to 14 athletes who will represent Canada at the 2011 Tuto Marchand Continental Cup in Foz de Iguazu, Brazil from August 24 – 26.

The tournament will be a tune-up for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship which will take place from August 30 – September 11 in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

At the Tuto Marchand Continental Cup the SMNT will begin tournament play on August 24 against Brazil, followed by Puerto Rico and conclude on August 26 against the Dominican Republic.

The SMNT roster for the Tuto Marchand Cup is an impressive list of 14 players, featuring professionals who have played all over the world. It is highlighted by eight athletes from last summer’s team including the NBA’s Joel Anthony (Montreal, QC). Anthony recently completed his fourth season in the NBA, all of them with the Miami Heat.

Adding more talent from the NBA is Andy Rautins (Syracuse, N.Y.), who spent his rookie season with the New York Knicks and Cory Joseph (Pickering, ON), who was recently selected in the first round of the NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs.

Other members of the team include European professionals Carl English (St. John’s, NL), Jesse Young (Peterborough, ON), Jermaine Anderson (Toronto, ON), Denham Brown (Toronto, ON), Levon Kendall (Vancouver, B.C.), Aaron Doornekamp (Odessa, ON) and Jevohn Shepherd (Toronto, ON). Rounding out the returning players is Kelly Olynyk (Kamloops, B.C.), who played for Gonzaga University last year.

The SMNT have already played a number of tune-up games during phase one and two of their training camp, which included games in Europe and more recently, two games versus Belgium at the 2011 Jack Donohue International Classic. The SMNT beat Belgium both games in front of packed gymnasiums at Ryerson University (Toronto, ON) and McMaster University (Hamilton, ON). Rautins was named Canada’s Player of the Game in game one of the series; while Olynyk garnered the honour in game two.
