ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the NPH leadership team, the Head of Referees is responsible for providing expertise & insights, while overseeing referee development programming & maintaining a high standard for service delivery. This role has been created to fill the needs of the Canadian basketball community and ultimately evolve the sport in our country. The Head of Referees is a leadership role which will continually evolve as the referee sector grows and expands within the company. The Head of Referees coordinates and works closely with the NPH Operations Manager to execute tasks, gather feedback and make adjustments for improvements & peak referee performance.

The Head of Referees is expected to follow and promote our philosophy of: 1. lead yourself, 2. lead your team and 3. execute.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborating with the leadership team in the recruitment and hiring of new referees.
  • Developing and implementing training programs for referees to ensure they are prepared for their roles.
  • Managing the scheduling and assignment of referees to games.
  • Monitoring and analyzing referee performance during games, with a reporting process in place to track progress.
  • Communicating with coaches, players, and other stakeholders to address any concerns or issues related to referee performance.
  • Being present on-site during game days and identifying and developing a trusted assistant with remote capability with support from the NPH leadership.
  • Creating innovative content related to referee training and development.
  • Combining the existing referee standards with innovative thinking to update and elevate the standards to meet the needs of the 2023 basketball climate.
  • Facilitating a two-way relationship between the basketball community, including coaches, players, parents, and fans, and the referees through both in-person and digital communication, leveraging NPH’s marketing arm.
  • Developing and implementing innovative digital marketing strategies, including social media campaigns to educate the community on rules, regulations, and specific calls, and provide opportunities for dialogue, Q&A, and expression of opinions and concerns.
  • Fostering an inclusive, service-based leadership approach that promotes positive dialogue and collaboration among all parties involved, leading to a stronger and healthier basketball environment.
  • Collaborate with the company’s senior leadership to create a personal growth program.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Team player with great interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with coaches, players, parents, and other stakeholders
  • Passion for the sport of basketball, with a deep understanding of the sport’s history, current landscape, and future direction
  • Strong understanding of basketball rules and regulations, with experience in training and educating referees on these standards
  • Proficient in the use of digital communication and marketing tools, including social media platforms and other digital marketing channels
  • Ability to operate calmly and effectively under stressful conditions
  • Reliable, punctual, hard worker and motivated self-starter
  • Solution-based mindset
