Canadian National HS Rankings – Release #8 #NPHTop25 – Team Resumes

We are now passed the mid-way point, and each team’s resume is starting to paint the picture of their respective seasons.

St Mike’s is looking untouchable and the only thing standing in the way of capturing their second OFSAA title in three years would be themselves. Gotta stay the course.

Stock Risers

Two teams that we’d throw in the “Stock Risers” category would be St Francis (St Catherines) and Corpus Christi (Burlington, ON) – both making signifcant jumps. St Francis went from #11 to #6–the highest they’ve ever been. Corpus skyrocketed from #22 to #11!

St Mike’s and Saint John’s Kilmarnock tangled in their second regular season game. After the Blue Raiders rolled over the competition at their tournament, it wasn’t the case against this SJK team, as they gave SMC some trouble, particularly in the first three quarters. In the end, it was too much fire power from the undefeated St Mikes squad, winning 77-61.

SMC Head Coach Jeff Zownir spoke about the SJK match up saying, “they have a balanced team, with size and veteran guys…we can’t forget that.”

“We try to attack opponents weaknesses and they are one of the teams out there that don’t have glaring weaknesses that others have.”

With both teams playing in the same league (CISAA) only one will come out, and advance to OFSAA.

St Francis, Corpus Christi Get Signature Victories, Continue Inclining

St Francis is now 33-2 on the season and has been on a steady incline all year. Fresh off a tournament championship and signature win against D’Youville at the St Benedict’s invitational, this squad has climbed five spots, firmly in the Top 10, at #6 in the country. We have been high on this team in appreciation of monitoring their growth over the last three years–now looking like a legitimate OFSAA contender.

Corpus Christi has the one of the biggest weapons on the Canadian high school basketball scene in Simi Shittu, surrounded by a quality supporting cast and solid coaching. They picked up their biggest victory of the season against Vaughan (56-52) at the St Mike’s Invitational, and nearly took down Pine Ridge in the process–a 65-62 loss.

Terry Fox Makes First Appearance in #NPHTop25

Burnaby South was knocked off the #1 spot in British Columbia for the first time this season, as Terry Fox picked up the 79-71 win in the Legal Beagle championship–the first one in 19 years! Terry Fox has now made a first appearance in the #NPHTop25

Harry Ainlay Drops Two in British Columbia

Harry Ainlay, arguably Alberta’s top team, made a trip to British Columbia for the Legal Beagle where they represented their province. Ainlay suffered losses to Burnaby South (91-80) in the semi-finals and Kelowna 76-73 in the bronze game.

The smoke is far from clear in Alberta…there isn’t one dominant team that sits above the rest of the pack. Multiple Alberta teams are on the outside looking in for release #8, but none in the #NPHTop25

Leboldus – Back-to-Back BRIT Champs

This squad could be the best in the West–several coaches in the West concur. Leboldus won the the BRIT championship for the second straight year, lead by Chan De Ciman and tournament MVP Carter Millar.
