OTTAWA,ON- For the second day in a row at the Jack Donohue tournament McGill played hard and stayed in the game, and this time it paid off. The McGill Redmen came back to take UNB to overtime and come away with an 80-75 win.
Winn Clark opened scoring for McGill with a fadeaway basket, and he and Karim Morisette started well and continued that play throughout this close game. However, after an equal first quarter and a Chris Jordan bucket at the buzzer, they trailed 15-14.
McGill’s Aleksander Mitrovic said “With every game we’re getting better and better. We have a lot of rookies on this team, and they’re getting the experience through gametime, and playing tough games like yesterday and today.”
UNB took a bigger lead in the second quarter with good contributions from Alex DesRoches and Daniel Quirion, whose low crossover and distance shooting helped him score 14 first-half points. On consecutive posessions, Daniel Quirion crossed over his defender and gets all the way to the basket, followed by the same cross except this time unleashing a stepback jumper from the top of the key.
The biggest highlight for UNB was a Seth Amoah three-point basket followed by a two-handed dunk off of a steal, and at halftime UNB had a 43-34 lead.
McGill spent lots of time in the locker room. Yesterday against Laurier, McGill hung tight and ended up with two chances to send the game to overtime but could not capitalize.
A Winn Clark high jump shot, then a behind the back move on the next posession brought McGill within six points, down 45-39. McGill players Cody Mazza-Anthony and Karim Sy-Morisette were able to find the holes in the defense and score, but after three quarters UNB led 58-51.
Though UNB’s Matthew Daley started the fourth quarter with a three, McGill clawed their way back into the game. A Tristan Renaud-Tremblay offensive rebound and hoop made it 64-62, and the Redmen took the lead 67-66.
Karim Sy-Morisette extended the lead for Ottawa and Daniel Quirion and Alex Desroches both only sunk one of their free-throw attempts for UNB. After McGill’s Winn Clark missed at the buzzer the game went to overtime tied at 70.
UNB started the extra frame with a three-pointer by Jordan Irvine, but McGill stormed right back with a hoop plus the hard from Karim Sy-Morisette, and another basket from Tristan Renaud-Tremblay.
Another basket from Karim Sy-Morisette brought the Ottawa lead to 79-75, and they closed out the game by not allowing any three-pointers and coming away with an 80-75 win in overtime.
Aleksander Mitrovic said what helped them win in overtime was that “we just kept going inside and it’s something we had got away from. It helped us get them in foul trouble and a lot of them were fouling out by the end of the game. That’s where we want to beat teams up, by getting to the glass and getting them in foul trouble. We got that success today so hopefully we get it tomorrow.”
UNB finishes the tournament tomorrow against Laurier at 11am, while McGill will play the host Ottawa University in the final game at 1pm.
