Saskatchewan Huskies Take Over in Fourth Q, Hand Acadia First Loss

SASKATOON,SK–The match up between the Huskies and the Axemen started out as it would between two undefeated programs. Tough hard basketball in the first three periods of play, however it was the Huskies that secured the victory 84-69.

The Axemen who are without All League player Owen Klassen (Pan Am) stayed close through to the third period. Right out of the gate however the Huskies shooting guard Duncan Jones knocked down two thee pointers that got Saskatchewan going.

Playing without CIS star Jammelle Barrett (injury) and Micheal Lieffers (Pan Am), the Huskies Head Coach Barry Rawlyk looked to younger players in this contest

“We for sure want our younger players to gain experience in preseasons games like this one,” explained Rawlyk.

The Huskies started two freshman in Matthew Forbes and Nick Foth. Taking advantage of a situation is just what power forward Forbes did. Connecting on 8-12 shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds, the rookie looked very promising to say the least.

” We have some size and depth in that position, with Micheal (Lieffers) being away there would be a situation for Matthew to step up.” 

That he did.

The Huskies kept it interesting up until the third Q, when Duncan Jones (20 points) and power forward Nolan Brudehl (15 rebounds) got into sync.

Acadia fought hard to withstand the surge from the dogs. Jonathan Tull led the way with 21 points  followed by Anthony Ashe with 14 respectively.

“We needed to sustain there third quarter effort” head coach Stephen Bauer explained.

The Axemen dropped their first loss of the season to the Huskies and look to rebound against Windsor today at the second set of games at the Graham Construction Shootout this evening.
