Ravens Win Big Back Home
Ottawa,ON—Carleton returned to the Raven’s Nest in their home whites, fresh and undefeated. “It’s always good to play here, just comfortable,” said Ravens guard Phil Scrubb. After opening the season with two wins at home, Carleton took to the road picking up four out of a possible four wins. Sitting at 6-0, the only undefeated team in the OUA, Carleton looked to remain strong against the McMaster Marauders.
Carleton showed their intensity early, getting to the basket and controlling the tempo. Tyson Hinz was able to get to the post in good position, early and often and was rewarded with easy baskets and free throws. Hinz also showed his effort on defense by drawing an early charge. Cole Hobin contributed with a three pointer, Aaron Chapman got a key block and made a nice pass, and Phil Scrubb began to heat up and Carleton closed the first quarter up 26-13. Carleton is playing well, but Coach Smart is preaching spacing and asks his team “Why can’t you be perfect at spacing?”
The Ravens are tenacious and run a dangerous press for other teams. By playing vicious defense, and hustling on offense, Carleton continued to build the lead. Phil Scrubb had a three pointer after fighting to maintain the possession, and Willy Manigat sunk back-to-back shots to put Carleton up 42-23. Cameron Michaud hit a tough basket for McMaster, and Robert Laws made a high lay-in. After a three-pointer by Cole Hobin was disallowed at the halftime buzzer, Carleton led 44-27.
In the second half Carleton continued to get to the post. Hinz and Chapman both went to work in the paint and were able to score and capitalize on second-chance opportunities. Elliot Thompson hit a deep three-pointer all the way from Fredericton. Taylor Black was able to get some momentum for McMaster and Carleton was forced into a shot clock violation. The game was played fast and the refs let the players play and allowed the teams to dictate the tempo. After three quarters the Ravens led 75-45.
To start the fourth quarter, Mike Kenny for Carleton and Wahidi Satar for McMaster exchanged long distance shots. McMaster played better defense in the final frame and shaved a thirty point beatdown into a thirteen point game. Carleton didn’t exactly let up, as was evidenced by a diving save by Thompson to flip the ball back in-bounds from within inches of the team bench. Carleton was outperformed in the final quarter and Phil Scrubb recommended “we have to play 100 percent all the time, we can’t afford to take breaks and we always have to play hard so that we’re ready once we get in a tough game
