7’0 Jason Hannibal TEARS OFF Rim at McMaster University!
Let me start off by saying, this was one of the craziest basketball experiences I’ve ever been a part of.
7’0 Jason Hannibal (free agent) and former Portland Pilot tore off the rim at McMaster University during an A-Game / No-Limit Performance scrimmage in Hamilton, Ontario.
Anger and frustration was the driving force behind this “Carnage” as Hannibal described it.
Over the last week, I have been in the gym watching top-notch Canadian basketball talent from every level, including PRO, NCAA, CIS, and top high school prospects.
In this particular scrimmage, it was Isaiah Watkins (Furman / NCAA) who has built a reputation for his toughness and high motor, that triggered the big man’s rage.
Watkins was being physical with Hannibal the entire game, however the seven footer was not getting any foul calls, which clearly fueled him.
After a loss, Hannibal blew up and went outside for a walk to cool down. The competition in the gym was fierce and the environment was tough, strategically built that way by Kyle Julius (A-Game Hoops) and Mihai Raducanu (No Limit Performance).
Hannibal’s mental composure was being tested…the McMaster University rim and backboard paid the price.
The giant out of Mississauga, Ontario was coming off of a knee injury last summer and was totally out of shape when I saw him at Huron Park recreation centre.
I grew up with Hannibal during same time period, so I have been tracking him since high school.
Since last summer, he has worked diligently to improve his stamina and mobility. He has made significant gains with great room for growth.
Evaluating him over the last few days, I have learned that Hannibal is a defensive anchor with his shot blocking and tenacity. Offensively, he has shown glimpses but has work to do in this area from a positioning and skill set standpoint.
Kyle Julius described Hannibal as, “a wide body space eater with good pursuit of the ball. Very good screener, has good hands and a defensive touch. Needs to work on offensive arsenal and moving without the ball. Tremendous potential as he has great fight in him and is extremely coachable.”
Congratulations big fella, you took off the rim, you took pride in it, and left everybody in the gym stunned.
Lets just hope the McMaster Unviersity operations folks can replace the rim in time for the Hamilton #NPHShowcase this weekend…the show MUST go on!
