PacWest Week 2 Power Rankings

Capilano head coach Dwayne Selby summed up the crazy finishes and surprising blowouts around the PacWest this past weekend:

“There’s a lot of parity in the league right now. Our league is up for grabs, and I told my guys that if you don’t show up to play every single night, anyone can beat you.”

Selby’s words have been identical to what almost every other coach in the league has been preaching since preseason.

VIU is the only squad still standing with an unblemished record, but they’ve been lobbed softballs thus far, beating Camosun, Kwantlen and CBC (the bottom three teams in the league) by an average of 25.7 points. The Mariners will face their biggest challenge when they host Quest and Capilano next weekend.

Quest shocked everyone with an 80-77 win at home over Langara, who was recently ranked the number-one team in the country – further fueling point guard Cartiea French-Toney’s go-to hashtag: #ATribeCalledQuestRunsThePacWest.

Douglas, the only team yet to win game, put up a valiant fight against both Quest and Capilano – but as a team that tends to live and die by the three, that could be the theme of their season.

CBC registered a somewhat surprising 108-104 win in overtime at Camosun. Up until then, Camosun had been playing quite well with a big win over Kwantlen and just an 11-point loss to rival VIU in week one.

For all I know, VIU could drop both of their next matchups, Quest could rocket up to the top of the rankings, and CBC could be .500 for the first time in longer than I could remember.

Things won’t really settle down and become rational until January, but for now, fans in B.C. should savour this unpredictability as each team attempts prove their worth in a wide-open league.
