HAMILTON, ON–It’s been a busy week for basketball in Ontario with tournaments taking place all over the province. The Teacher’s Life Silver Fox Invitational was a joy to be at. It featured future prospects as well as current CIS prospects that coaches were in attendance for.

In what started off to look like it was going to be an upset for the Loyola Hawks turned into a repeat championship that was lead by Rohan Boney and Jake Babic. The Hawks ended by ending the run of Bishop Tonnas beating them 73-62.

From tip off, one of BT’s guards, Jeremy Chan got off to a firey start knocking down three after three and the boys from Ancaster found themselves up by 10 in the first quarter; however, that lead was cut to 4 by the end of the first.

It wouldn’t take long before Boney realized that he could beat his defenders of the dribble and got to the rack time and time again. Boney and Babic lived at the line all game, both finishing three point plays on multiple occasions.

The bench usually doesn’t get much praise in championship games but this time they will. Oliver McMayoni brought the defensive intensity up a few notches, recording 2 steals on his personal stat sheet. He was the same guy that was diving for loose balls and putting tons of pressure on ball handlers.

Coach Laurin was very satisfed with his team, “when our guys put that much effort on the floor, we’re happy wit that. Our full court pressure made them make decisions that they otherwise wouldn’t have made.”

Loyola is a team that you’ll always hear about in the last bunch of teams in tournament play. This tournament was the 7th one they’ve particpated in this year and has added great value as a learning experience.

“When we play in tournaments, we play so many games and get put in certain situations that we can learn from. This is our first tournament win, and everytime we lose, we look at the situations that caused us to lose and break them down, using them to get ready for our next game.”

You can be sure that you’ll here more about the Hawks throughout the regular season as they try and make a run for OFSAA.
