LANGLEY,BC– NPH: “Hey Jacob, what are you up to this season?”
Jacob Doerksen: “I’m actually sitting in the airport heading to Germany to play!”
This was the dialogue that was communicated by the CIS star en route to Deutschland in continuance of a fabulous basketball career at Trinity Western University.
Ironically, Doerksen will be suiting up with the UBC Tigers in Germany for the 2011-2012 season; no relation to cross-town Canada West rivals, the UBC Thunderbirds.
Prior to informing NPH on his team name, Doerksen joked, “you will probably have a good laugh at this one.”
Doerksen has had quite a resume at TWU which includes: being named 2008 CIS Player of the year, holding the record in school history for rebounds with 19, being named to the FISU squad to represent Canada, and exiting as a Spartan with averages of 20.5 PPG and 10.8 RPG.
The 6’7 forward’s realization that he will cross the ocean to begin a new life came with not a moment to spare.
“It happened pretty sudden…signed friday, got my flight yesterday,” explained Doerksen, moments before catching his flight.
Doerksen’s name had been passed around by fellow Trinity Western Alumni Steve Janzen, currently a UBC Tiger.
“It happened through Steve; I have played with him a few times and he got my name out to the coach,” he explained.
Fittingly to his CIS accomplishments, Doerksen ended his last season leading TWU to a silver medal at the 2011 CIS Championships in Nova Scotia.
However, as Doerksen enters a new team and country, saying that it will be an interesting year would be an understatement.
NPH: “You Speak any German?”
JD: “I know about three words…it’s good to be young!”
“I gotta run, boarding soon”
NPH wishes Jacob Doerksen the best of luck in his future endeavours!
