TORONTO,ON–What do you get when the top cadet players across the country are assembled into one gym?

Controlled chaos.

With approximately 30 developing bodies poured on the Ryerson University gym like concrete, the high dose of testosterone would naturally lead these young players to repeated mistakes and Renato Pasquali, Technical Director for Canada Basketball into speaking with his hands quite amusingly.

Open Cadet Tryout

On day one, it was an open tryout extended to any cadet level player in Canada that felt they had the skills to compete on a national level.

Notable names in the open tryout included Mike Provenzano, (London, ON/H.B Beal) Chris Egi, (Toronto,ON/St. Matthew) Jake Babic, (Oakville, ON/ Loyola) Jalen Poyser, (Toronto, ON/Father Henry Carr) and Devonte Campbell (Maple, ON/ Joan of Arc)

However, of the 25+ players in attendance, only 6’6 Chris Egi and 6’5 Devonte Campbell were called back to attend the Invitational tryout the following day.

Michael Provenzano Overlooked?

In the Cadet National team Open tryout, 5’9 PG, Michael Provenzano of London, Ontario truly impressed proving to be the only true lead guard in attendance. During the footwork/mid-range drills, Provenzano displayed his masterful shooting touch finishing at a scorching 80-90% efficiency. With that said, he now must extend his range to the three point line.

In addition, when breaking into scrimmage, Provenzano was involved with virtually every point that his team scored. He showed superior ability to slice and dice through defenders on the break and dished off pin point passes to teammates.

Rationale

With all his talent at the lead guard position, Provenzano’s lack of size is likely the biggest factor for not being called back to the invitational tryout. Matching up against guards at least 6’0 tall, having Provenzano on the cadet roster could be a risky move. However, it would have been interesting to see how he matched up against players in the invitational tryout.

Note: The H.B Beal freashman led his high school team at OFSAA, the Ontario provincial championships, excelling among seniors.

Cadet National Team Invitational Tryout

The Cadet Invitational tryout compiled the country’s finest, essentially displaying Canada’s future stars in the process. Household names such as Andrew Wiggins, Jamar Ergas and soon to be, Justin Jackson were in attendance along with representation from around Canada.

Evaluating players in this type of environment can be challenging as it limits what an in game setting would provide about a prospect. Therefore, NPH felt it was necessary to attend each day possible to witness the cream of the crop in action [Sunday and Monday closed to the public & media].
