TORONTO,ON– Canada Basketball has announced the athletes invited to participate in the 2011 Cadet Men’s National Team (CMNT) tryout by invitation, team staff and tryout camp schedule. The CMNT tryouts run from May 20 – 23 at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Hailing from across the nation, 30 of the top age-eligible male athletes have been invited to compete for a roster spot on the 2011 CMNT and have the chance to represent Canada on the international stage. This summer’s team will compete at the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men in Cancun, Mexico taking place from June 21 – 25.

Last summer, Canada’s Cadet Team made history by beating Lithuania and winning the bronze medal at the first ever FIBA U17 World Championship for Men in Hamburg, Germany. The only invited athlete returning from last year’s team is Andrew Wiggins (Concord, ON); while other CMNT hopefuls include notable names such as Tanveer Bhullar (North York, ON) and Kevin Zabo (Gatineau, QC), who both participated in the CMNT training camp last summer. Zabo helped Quebec win gold at the 2010 17U National Championships in Winnipeg, where he was also named to the Second All-Star Team as a fifteen year old.

The list of invited athletes includes 2010 15U National Championship standouts such as Tyrell Bellot-Green (Toronto, ON), who helped Ontario win the gold and was named tournament Most Valuable Player. First All-Star Team selections Malcolm Duvivier (Toronto, ON), Patrick Steeves (Montreal, QC), Noah Daoust (Dorval, QC), Jamie Madewan (Richmond, BC) and Junior Sesay (Winnipeg, MB); and Second All-Star Team selections Daniel Foo (Corner Brook, NL), Chase Ruttenberg (North Vancouver, BC) and Kemar Alleyne (Toronto, ON), will also be present this weekend.

In the first ever FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Men in 2009, Canada defeated Venezuela to claim the bronze medal and qualify for the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship. The top three finishers of this summer’s competition will qualify for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championship in Lithuania.
