ABBOTSFORD,BC– The Senior Women’s National Team (SWNT) will begin their preparation for the 2011 FIBA Americas Championship for Women with the first phase of their summer-long schedule on May 16 at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, British Columbia.

This summer’s FIBA Americas Championship for Women will act as an Olympic qualifying tournament, where the winner will earn a berth to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, England. Those nations that finish between second and fourth place will compete at the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifier Championship and have a chance to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The FIBA World Qualifying Tournament is set for June 25 – July 1, 2012, the host is still to be determined.

This marks the second straight year that the Senior Women’s program will train at the University of the Fraser Valley. Last summer, the team played two domestic games at the campus in Abbotsford, defeating both Sweden and Chile in preparation for the 2010 FIBA World Championship for Women in Czech Republic.

From there, a squad will be identified and will head across the Atlantic to train and compete in exhibition games in Europe from May 27 – June 12. The second phase of training for the Senior Women’s Program will return to the University of the Fraser Valley and will begin on July 26, which includes a tour of games in Asia. The third and final phase of training camp will conclude in September, where the team will be selected and depart for Colombia.

The list of athletes attending the tryout by invitation camp includes a core group of nine athletes who participated in the 2010 FIBA World Championships last summer, including team captain Teresa Gabriele (Mission, BC), and long time National Team members Kim Smith (Mission, BC), Chelsea Aubry (Kitchener, ON) and Courtnay Pilypaitis (Ottawa, ON). Three members of last year’s team will not be present this summer. Kaela Chapdelaine (Abbotsford, BC) and Jordan Adams (Overton, NV) have both retired; while Natalie Achonwa (Guelph, ON) will be spending the summer at Notre Dame University taking summer courses and training.

Attached is the SWNT tryout by invitation camp and overall 2011 schedules for the remainder of the summer as well as a complete list of team staff and invited athletes who are taking part in the tryout by invitation camp.
