Johnny Berhane Leads Ottawa Gee-Gees to Largest Victory over NCAA Opponent

Over the past summer, many in the US may have heard of the Ottawa Gee-Gees for the first time, thanks to Warren Ward representing the program, making noise in Las Vegas during NBA pre-draft work outs.

However, Ward has now graduated, and the next chapter for Coach James Derouin and his Gee-Gees has now begun. Following a CIS final 8 appearance from last year, Ottawa hopes to return to nationals and take care of unfinished business.

Senior guard Johnny Berhane, one of the best shooters in the country now takes charge of a competent and deep Gee-Gees squad. This past Friday, Ottawa defeated TCU of the BIG 12 conference (NCAA) convincingly, 90-74.

Berhane lead the way with 26 points, including six three pointers. Third-year forward Vikas Gill notched a career-high six long bombs, for a total of 20 points.

Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue added 13 points, while Mike L’Africain, [who is expected to have a larger role for the team], put in 11 points and a team-high six assists to only one turnover.

This margin of victory is the biggest in program history against NCAA teams, and makes it their third win against this level of competition, with the last one coming in 2006 against La Salle.

The Ottawa Gee-Gees hold an overall record of 3-14 against their American counterparts, and have both Wisconsin and Syracuse visiting the nation’s capital on August 22 & 24.
