Women’s U16 Roster Unveiled
With the Men’s U16 team recently wrapping up their Silver second-place finish at the FIBA Americas Championship, it’s time for the next generation of female talent to take the international stage.
The Women’s U16 FIBA Americas Championship is taking place in Puebla, Mexico from June 24th – 28th with a place in next years’ 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship on the line.
Per Canada Basketball:
“This is the first time many of these athletes will compete on the international stage. We had a strong training camp and this team is ready to compete,” said co-Head Coach Carly Clarke.
Clarke (Ryerson University) is in her 5th year with the U16/U17 program. She will be joined by co-Head Coach Jodi Gram (Bill Crothers S.S.), Assistant Coach Dani Sinclair (University of Victoria) and Performance Analyst Michele Hynes (University of Manitoba).
The team will play exhibition against the USA and Brazil prior to starting the tournament in which they will face off against Cuba, Venezuela and Brazil in preliminary round.
“We have been working with a pool of young athletes from across the country over the past year in preparation for this main international competition” said Denise Dignard, Director Women’s High Performance. “We are excited to observe their growth during this competition and see the key learnings to integrate into their training after this experience competing against the best of their age in our Americas zone.”
Athletes were identified throughout the year in a series of identification camps and recommendations from the Provincial/Territorial Service Organizations. In 2014, the U17 Women’s National Team finished 6th at the U17 FIBA World Championships. Canada is currently ranked 4th worldwide in the FIBA Women’s age-group rankings.
