HALIFAX, NS–With UBC star guard Joshua Whyte sidelined due to injury, the Thunderbirds needed to pick up the slack in order to defeat a very explosive Saskatchewan Huskies squad.

This remedy came in the form of a red hot performance by senior guard Alex Murphy of UBC. Murphy, who was sensational all tournament long, shot 9/16 from the field, including 7/10 from deep.

Alex ends his CIS career with a sensational performance, registering 36 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists, leading UBC to a 111-95 victory over Saskatchewan and earning a bronze medal at nationals.

“It will set in a little bit later, I’m still full of emotion…I will look back on it and it’s a good thing,” explained Murphy on his performance.

The uptempo game was composed of little defense as the final score suggests, however creating an entertaining platform for the bronze medal game.

The athletic wing on UBC, Kamar Burke benefitted from this style of play as he finished with a strong performance, flirting with a triple double:15 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists.

On Saskatchewan’s end, it was the usual suspect in tournament all-star, Jamelle Barrett who recorded 28 points and 10 assists.

Yet, the player of the game was without a doubt, Alex Murphy who gives a lot of credit to UBC supporters.

“UBC is a place where you get a lot of support from outside people and being in the program for five years, it’s just really emotional as you build bonds over the years.”

Murphy continued, “It’s not just the coaches and players, it’s my parents too…it’s good to go out on a win for sure but I know we didn’t come for this colour medal.”

The metro centre provided a great playing enviorment as Halifax drew a total attedance of 20,504 over the course of the tournament.

“Everybody’s really firendly here, its been awesome…sask has a lot of fans, we have a lot of fans and parents supported us. It’s been an awesome atmosphere, I played here my first year and we’re all really proud to play on this court.”
