Day one standouts in the NPH D1 Junior Division
The start of the Junior D1 session was nothing short of electric, setting the tone for an action-packed season ahead. Young talents are stepping up, showcasing skills that promise to transform the future of the sport. With each dribble, pass, and shot, these athletes are proving they have what it takes to dominate. Day 1 highlighted some stellar performances, but two players, in particular, rose above the rest, displaying undeniable skill and poise on the court. Let’s dive into their standout performances and see why they are the top prospects to watch.
Top Performers
1. Shalahn Beckford – Class of 2028
Coming off of a championship with Team Ontario in the Canada Basketball nations, Shalahn Beckford, the dynamic point guard, put on a clinic in his NPH D1 Junior debut. His ability to penetrate the defense and finish at the rim was a spectacle.
Against Polaris Prep, Beckford was relentless, pouring in 27 points on an efficient 11-of-18 shooting. His playmaking was just as impressive, tallying 10 assists, showing his incredible vision and unselfish nature. His reads in the pick-and-roll situation were spot-on, as he consistently found open teammates, turning opportunities into points.
Not only did Beckford score and assist at a high level, but he also showed tenacity on the defensive end, racking up 3 steals. His court awareness and quick hands disrupted Polaris Prep’s offense multiple times, resulting in easy transition points for his team. His second game performance was equally noteworthy, with 14 points on a near-perfect 6-of-7 shooting, accompanied by 10 assists, 5 steals, and 4 rebounds. After Day 1, he’s tied for first in scoring and leads all players in assists—a testament to his all-around game and his potential to dominate as both a scorer and a playmaker.
Game 1 vs. Polaris Prep: 27 points, 11/18 FG, 4 rebounds, 10 assists, 3 steals
Game 2: 14 points, 6/7 FG, 4 rebounds, 10 assists, 5 steals
2. David Kouadio – Class of 2029
David Kouadio of Polaris Prep is another name to circle this season. Standing at 6’2” with an impressive 6’8” wingspan, Kouadio has the tools to become a dominant force on both ends of the court. The 2024 Showcase League finals MVP is averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game, he’s proven himself as a versatile scorer who can impact the game inside and out.
Kouadio’s shooting touch from deep is a standout part of his game. As a point guard, he has the ability to space the floor and stretch defenses, making him a dual-threat scorer. His long wingspan not only aids his finishing ability but also makes him a defensive disruptor, as he can cover ground quickly and challenge shots effectively. On defense, Kouadio’s 3 steals per game show his knack for reading passing lanes and using his length to his advantage.
His height and wingspan allow him to rebound over taller players, often turning defensive rebounds into transition opportunities where he excels in pushing the tempo. Kouadio’s all-around skill set makes him a player who can carry a team, and his potential for growth is immense given his physical tools and skill level.
Averages: 20.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals
