Adeel Sahibzada, a well known name in Canadian Basketball has left an indelible mark on everyone he’s worked with as both a distinguished coach and the founder of the renowned Toronto Basketball Academy. Revered for his exceptional technical expertise and commitment to excellence, Sahibzada has played an instrumental role in the identification and development of talented players, growth of basketball in Canada and providing support to the next generation of coaches on the come up.
Hailing from Kashmir, Sahibzada’s deep-rooted passion for basketball began at an early age. As an immigrant, he fell in love with the sport during his lunch and recess breaks. He had an opportunity to play college basketball but injuries sidelined his playing career. He found a way to harness his love for the sport and embarked on a journey to make a significant impact in the basketball community.
He has since solidified his place as one of the more influential coaches in Canada.
Sahibzada’s coaching career took a monumental turn when he founded the Toronto Basketball Academy, one of the most prominent programs in Canada. This academy serves as a breeding ground for aspiring athletes, nurturing their talents and providing them with unparalleled opportunities for growth. Under Sahibzada’s guidance, the academy has become a beacon of excellence, attracting talented individuals from across the nation. Sahibzada’s meticulous approach to player development has produced a plethora of successful athletes who have gone on to excel at the collegiate and professional levels.
In addition to his roles as a coach and mentor, Sahibzada is also an Ed.D (Higher Leadership) student, further enhancing his ability to make a lasting impact in the basketball community. His pursuit of an advanced degree in educational leadership allows him to integrate academic principles and research with his coaching and mentorship endeavours. Sahibzada regularly incorporates his education into his coaching philosophy, creating an environment that prioritizes both on-court success and the holistic development of players.
Recognizing the value of education in fostering personal growth and empowering coaches, Sahibzada actively integrates his studies into his mentorship programs. Through workshops, clinics, and seminars, he shares his insights and research findings with fellow coaches, providing them with practical knowledge and strategies to elevate their coaching abilities. Sahibzada’s commitment to lifelong learning and educational leadership contributes to the continuous improvement of the basketball community in Canada.
A lot of his former players and coaches are also joining him at the next level. Coach Yusuf Ali is going to be announced on a staff at the NCAA D1 level shortly, Coach Sharmarke Mohamed is the lead assistant coach at Ontario Tech and Coach Mike Jackman is the head coach at Centennial College. Dalmer Ali who is presently a graduate assistant at Florida State University. These are just one of the few coaches that have come through the TBA system.
Sahibzada’s commitment to the growth of basketball extends beyond the walls of his academy. He has been coaching college basketball for the past 7 years with stops in Toronto, Florida, Chicago and Vancouver. At the moment, he is the Lead Assistant at Simon Fraser University where he was was instrumental in signing the strongest recruiting class in Canada, comprising of 11 total signees in 2022.
