Pinky Lewis Invitational – 37 Years of Hamilton Basketball Tradition
The 2016 version of the Pinky Lewis Invitational, hosted by McMaster and North Pole Hoops, will feature 16 high calibre Canadian basketball programs, and some of the best talent in the country.
The Pinky Lewis has been a staple in the Ontario high school basketball season for almost 40 years, dating back to 1979. It originated as a four-team university tournament, but eventually transitioned to a high school tournament under the guidance of Joe Raso, currently the Head Scout for the Canadian National Team.
Norman “Pinky” Lewis, who the tournament is named after, was a beloved and respected sports administrator and athlete in Hamilton who was best known for his involvement with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the McMaster Marauders. The Pinky Lewis Recreational Centre in Hamilton continues his legacy in serving the community.
The following quote from Lewis reminds us what this game is ultimately about–a tool to be used to positively impact lives.
“The winning doesn’t matter much, but if we can teach the kids how to win and lose gracefully, how to be good sportsmen, and if we start them along the road to good citizenship, I, for one, will feel satisfied and happy.” – Norman “Pinky” Lewis
With the evolution of Canadian basketball, this year’s tournament will feature a combination of prep and traditional high school programs.
