SAINT JOHN, NB–The Saint John Mill Rats pounded the Summerside Storm, 118-97, en route to winning their first regular season home game of the season in front of 1,865 fans.
The Mill Rats came into the game having just won four of their last five games on a recent five-game road trip.
It was also the debut of three new players for Saint John: 6’4 guard Greg Plummer, 6’6 forward Antonio Burks, and 7’0 centre David Collins.
Plummer impressed all game with 25 points, while Burks scored 14 and Collins 2.
The Storm blitzed out to an early 13-4 lead, but Anthony Anderson began to find his rhythm, and the Mill Rats clawed back to 51-51 near the close of the half.
Anderson’s three pointer to beat the halftime buzzer gave Saint John a 60-55 lead.
The floodgates opened for Saint John in the third quarter as the Mill Rats opened a 94-72 lead. The Storm never challenged the remainder of the game.
“The bench including the 3 new guys gave us as tremendous lift with 49 points which we weren’t getting from our reserves in the first 8 games of the season,” stated Mill Rats Head Coach Jaren Jackson. “And credit to Plummer and Burks who literally came in late yesterday on flights and were able to fit in and contribute right away.”
In addition to the new players, Anthony Anderson scored 23, Will Blalock 18, Antoine Tisby 12, and PJ Young 9.
The win moves Saint John into a tie with Summerside for third place, at 5-4.
Saint John is back at Harbour Station again tomorrow night at 7pm as they face the Oshawa Power. On Friday night, the Mill Rats host the Halifax Rainmen.
