NPH Presents PHASE 1 National & Provincial Awards

TORONTO,ON–NPH in collaboration with PHASE 1 have gone through the grueling process of choosing the 2011 National and Provincial award winners, which portray basketball excellence at the high school level.

No matter which way you slice it, not every player along with their supporters will be completely satisfied. However the truth is, those that have been nominated for such prestigous awards have already achieved a great deal on the high school level. 

With the growth of Canadian talent that continues to blossom, decisions were definitely not easy; however, without further ado, NPH presents the PHASE 1 National and Provincial Awards.

*It is important to note that the winners of the polls don’t entirely determine the winners, however they do play a role in selection.*

Mr Basketball Canada

Myck Kabongo | Findlay Prep | Toronto, ON

  • McDonalds All-American
  • Jordan Brand All-American
  • Texas Longhorns Commit

Notable: Braeden Anderson led the way in the polls with great support from Alberta. Anderson is committed to the Kansas Jayhawks

Miss Basketball Canada

Karly Roser | St Mary’s | Hamilton, ON

  • Northwestern Commit [NCAA]
  • REDA Alumni
  • Participant in Nike’s Tournament of Champions
  • AAAA OFSAA Provincial Champion

Mr Basketball Ontario

Kevin Pangos | Denison | Newmarket, ON

  • Selected to 2011 Nike Hoop Summit
  • Selected to 2010 Jordan Brand Classic
  • Gonzaga Bulldogs Commit [NCAA]

Miss Basketball Ontario

Kelly Ring | Louis Riel | Ottawa, ON

  • AAA OFSAA Provincial Champion
  • University of Ottawa Commit [CIS]
  • Cadet National Team Member
  • Junior National Team Member

Mr Basketball BC

Vijay Dhillon | R.C Palmer | Richmond, BC

  • AAA BC Provincial Champion
  • AAA BC MVP
  • University of Victoria Commit

Notable: 2012 Manroop Clair led the way in the Polls collecting 48% while Dhillon had 37%

Miss Basketball BC

Alisha Roberts | York House | Burnaby, BC

  • 2010 BC Provincial Champion
  • Two-time Silver Medalist, U15 Nationals
  • Junior National Team Member

It came down to the voting for this one, with Roberts collecting an overwhelming 56% of total votes to break the ice.

Mr Basketball Quebec

Khem Birch | Notre Dame | Montreal, QC 

  • McDonald’s All-American
  • Jordan Brand All-American
  • University of Pittsburgh Commit [NCAA]

Notable: NPH #7-ranked Jonathan Tshibuy collected the bulk of the votes with 62% however Khem Birch’s resume speaks for itself with Mcdonald’s All-American and Jordan Brand All American honours.

Miss Basketball Quebec

Nirra Fields | Mater Dai | Lachine, QC

  • Junior National Team Member
  • Cadette National Team Member
  • High-Major NCAA Prospect
  • Lives with Los Angeles Lakers Head Coach, Mike Brown

Notable: 82% Vote Catherine Traer. The lack of voting is certainly due to the fact that Fields has attended prep school in America the last few years. However, she currently looks like Canada’s brightest female star!

Mr Basketball Manitoba

Joey Nitychoruk | St. Paul’s | Winnipeg, MB

  • Provincial Team Member
  • Provincial Championship Finalist
  • Committed to Lakehead U [CIS]

This one was a close call with several deserving athletes; however, the voting poll took Nitychoruk over  the top to be named Mr. Basketball Manitoba.

Miss Basketball Manitoba

Alex Warburton | Sanford Collegiate | Carman, Manitoba

  • Committed to University of Winnipeg [CIS]
  • Provincial All-Star and Bronze Medalist at 2009-2010 Provincial Championship
  • School average of 97.5 % on school honour roll!

In addition to her remarkable accolades, Warburton also edged out Tia Coulter, another strong candidate in the polls with 65% of the overall vote.

Mr Basketball Saskatchewan

Matthew Forbes | Lumsden | Regina Beach, SK

  • AAAA Provincial Champion
  • All-Canada Classic Nominee
  • Committed to University of Saskatchewan [CIS]

Miss Basketball Saskatchewan

Paige Crozon | Humboldt Collegiate Institute | Humboldt SK

  • Youngest player selected to 2011 All-Canada Classic
  • Provincial Champion
  • Junior National Team Member

Crozon earns this award outright with a whopping 90% of the vote.

Mr Basketball Atlantic

Mandrez Downey | Cole Harbour | North Preston, Nova Scotia

  • Nova Scotia Provincial Team Member
  • Provincial scoring Champion [30+ PPG]
  • Led Nova Scotia to victory at 2009 Canada Summer Games

Miss Basketball Atlantic

Vanessa Pickard | Riverview | Riverview, NB

  • Committed to St. Francis Xavier [CIS]
  • Selected to All-Canada Classic
  • Three Straight Provincial Championships

Mr Basketball Alberta

Braeden Anderson | Wilbraham & Monson | Okotoks, Alberta

  • Committed to Kansas [NCAA]
  • Selected to All-Canada Classic
  • Selected to Derby Festival Roster [Among some of America’s top talent]

Notable: Jimmy Ralph who also had an outstanding season, garnered the most support from the polls with 37% against Anderson’s 28%. However, the received the nod with a superb season of his own, ultimately making his commitment to the NCAA’s Kansas Jayhawks.

Miss Basketball Alberta

Adut Bulgak | Archibishop O’Leary | Edmonton, AB

  • Garnering NCAA interest
  • Provincial Team Member
  • Gold medalist at 2009 Summer Games

Notable: In the tightest poll race of them all with four of the five nominees in hovering around, Alexa Gray of Centennial collected the most votes with 34% against Bulgak’s 26%. However, Bulgak’s dominance in the high school scene in Alberta is undeniable. A tough decisiong had to be made, and in this case Bulgak was the beneficiary.
