ROLE SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager of Referees, the NPH Referee is responsible for officiating basketball games in a respectful, courteous, and professional manner, while providing a fun and safe environment for all participants. The NPH Referee will implement established Event rules to the best of their abilities. Referees report directly to the Manager of Referees and work in conjunction with the event Operations Manager as well as other NPH staff where necessary. Prior to beginning work, the NPH Referee must undergo and complete a training program. The NPH Referee is expected to understand, Embody and push the NPH culture with the basketball community. Being a referee means being in a leadership role, which has the power and influence to make or break an event—Referees at NPH are expected use this power responsibly to set a positive tone in our environment.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Intangible

The intangible traits is what NPH evaluators primary focus will be on:

  • Great Energy—Bring your Passion, Love & Enthusiasm for the sport & community 
  • Maintain a positive attitude around participants and peers
  • Zero tolerance for disrespect to anybody in the basketball community—players, coaches, parents, fans. Keep it professional. Referees have a critical role to play here—lead by example. Set the tone. 
  • Maintain Composure – Games are intense and expected to get emotional between players, coaches, parents and fans. The referee is not expected to get dragged into emotion—the referee’s role is to be the voice of reason—exercise logic and turn down the temperature ***Never turn up the temperature***

Tangible

The tangible traits are what the NPH Manager of referees will be focused on, along with NPH staff.

  • Thoroughly understand rules of League (s)
  • Obtain Adequate Referee Skills & Technical Understanding through training program, Experience & Repetition
  • Wear NPH uniform
  • Responsible for being on-site 15-30 minutes prior to the first scheduled game
  • Officiate all games assigned by the Manager of Referees
  • Notify the Manager of Referees of all shift changes
  • Ensure games start and end on time
  • Referee fair and consistent games to the best of your ability
  • Report any relevant incidents or concerns to the NPH Site Manager.
  • Ensures the safety of the players and coaches
  • Provide truthful and detailed reports if asked by the Manager of Referees
  • Stay and officiate a friendly match in the event of a forfeit, as long as the minimum number of participants is present
  • Coordinate effectively with scorekeepers and game leads
  • Keeps track of event times, starting and stopping play when necessary
  • Coordinate with leadership to develop personal growth plan

  • Team player with great interpersonal skills and a passion for the sport of basketball
  • Ability to operate calmly and effectively under stressful conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, hard work and motivated self-starter.
