Top 25 NPH High School Rankings – Week 8

In the final edition of the 2018 NPH High School Rankings, it was a very busy week for the top half of the list. After 7 weeks at the second spot, CTA has finally claimed number one after going 4-0 at the Sun Youth Holiday Classic, but not far behind them remains Orangeville Prep, who had a couple impressive wins of their own down in Massachusetts. We had some stellar individual performances from TBA, and King’s Christian managed to gain a few spots to close out their year.

***All scores and team records are up to date as of December 27th, 9am EST.***

1. CanadaTopflight Academy (Ottawa, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 2 Ranking Change: Up 1 League Record: 4-0 Overall Record: 17-2 Week 8 Wins: Champlain College (109-74), Dawson College (89-82), Thetford Academy (94-91), Brebeuf College (85-73) Week 8 Losses: None

Winning the 38th Sun Youth Holiday Classic was everything Canada Topflight Academy needed to finally claim top spot in the rankings. Ankit Choudhary was named Tournament MVP for a few top-level performances against Dawson College and Brebeuf in the finals. In a tournament with a number of CEGEP and CCAA eligible schools, CTA took on all challengers and managed to go undefeated even without arguably their best player Muon Reath. CTA has more than done enough to claim tops in the country for at least week 8.

2. Orangeville Prep (Orangeville, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: Ranking Change: Down 1 League Record: 8-1 Overall Record: 18-5 Week 8 Wins: Dexter (85-60), Woodstock Blue (82-71) Week 8 Losses: Woodstock Gold (74-65)

Orangeville managed to go 2-1 over the last weekend at the second Basketbull Session. A single digit loss to the #2 nationally ranked post grad club according to Prep Circuit was their only blemish in an otherwise impressive performance in Springfield, Massachusetts. Jefferson Koulibaly had 15 points and 5 rebounds in the loss, but continues to make his case as a high level D-1 Prospect as the year carries on.

3. Ridley College (St. Catherines, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 3 Ranking Change: None League Record: 7-2 Overall Record: 17-7 Week 8 Wins: Knox School (56-53) Week 8 Losses: Putnam Science Academy (80-56)

Ridley also managed to go 2-1 at the second Basketbull session over the last weekend, and remain steady at 3. Their only loss was to the #1 ranked post grad team in america according to Prep Circuit. It was the second time Ridley matched up against Putnam this season, and this result was a slightly better performance.

4. RISE Prep (Brantford, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 4 Ranking Change: None League Record: 8-4 Overall Record: 21-9 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

RISE had the week off and remains at the number 4 spot to close out 2018. Off of the court, Miguel Tomley officially committed to Santa Clara, where he will be joining Ridley College’s Jaden Bediako next year.

5. Thornlea (Thornhill, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 5 Ranking Change: None League Record: 7-5 Overall Record: 13-8 Week 8 Wins: Sun Youth (90-77), Vaughan (80-73) Week 8 Losses: St. Lambert (80-73), Champlain Lennoxville (90-73)

A 2-2 4th place performance at the 38th Annual Sun Youth Holiday Classic has Thornlea steady at the five spot to close out 2018. Both of Thornlea’s losses came against CCAA eligible teams, the same organization that Humber College and Sheridan belong to, so it doesn’t necessarily come as a huge shock. The Thunder managed to take care of business against some lower ranked teams on this list, and as a result, retain their spot going into 2019.

6. TRC Academy (Brantford, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: Ranking Change: None League Record: 8-0 Overall Record: 14-5 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

No games this week for TRC Academy, but their was some good news off of it, with the commitment of Sabry Philips to San Diego for the 2019-2020 season.

7. Crestwood Prep (North York, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 7 Ranking Change: None League Record: 7-2 Overall Record: 15-4 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

Crestwood has another quiet week with their prep players on holiday, while a number of their lower teams were in the southern United States for a few tournaments before Christmas. They remain 7th nationally.

8. Father Henry Carr (Rexdale, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 8 Ranking Change: None League Record:7-2 Overall Record: 13-6 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

FHC enjoyed their Christmas break, and will be back in action this upcoming week in the US.

9. Rothesay Netherwood (Rothesay, New Brunswick)

Last Week Ranking: Ranking Change: None League Record: 7-3 Overall Record: 17-5 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

Another team enjoying a well deserved Christmas, Rothesay will be back in the New Year to try and hold on to a top 10 spot.

10. King’s Christian (Oakville, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 11 Ranking Change: Up 1 League Record: 8-6 Overall Record: 13-8 Week 8 Wins: Thetford CEGEP (57-33), Halifax Prep (71-69) Week 8 Losses: Brebeuf College (83-73)

A 2-1 finish at the Sun Youth Holiday Classic has given King’s Christian their highest ranking yet this season, finishing 2018 10th in the country. They will have a chance to move up even higher in a few weeks time when they take on #3 Ridley College in league play on January 10th.

11. Southwest Academy (London, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 10 Ranking Change: Down 1 League Record: 5-4 Overall Record: 11-8 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

Southwest has been one of the pleasant surprises of the first half this year, and will look to continue making some noise in both league play and across North America in the second half of the season after New Years.

12. Vaughan (Vaughan, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 12 Ranking Change: None League Record: 4-6 Overall Record: 11-16 Week 8 Wins: Thetford CEGEP (79-61) Week 8 Losses: Brebeuf (76-64), Thornlea (80-73)

Going 1-2 at the Sun Youth for Vaughan may have been disappointing, but it still won’t be enough to drop them this week. Wazir Latiff continued to be the scoring machine Vaughan has needed him to be in big games. Add in a valiant effort vs one of the top CEGEP teams in the country in Brebeuf, and Vaughan has managed to show they still belong where they are.

13. Halifax Prep (Halifax, Nova Scotia)

Last Week Ranking: 13 Ranking Change:  League Record: 7-3 Overall Record: 9-3 Week 8 Wins: Sun Youth (105-89) Week 8 Losses: St. Lambert (88-67), King’s Christian (71-69)

Halifax remains at the 13 spot after going 1-2 at the Sun Youth Holiday Classic. Halifax looked very impressive in the victory over Sun Youth, but their rawness was on display against a fundamentally sound St. Lambert CEGEP squad that managed to counter Halifax’s athleticism with quick ball movement, and knocking down open looks. A nail biter of a loss to King’s Christian capped off a trip to Montreal that we are certain was a valuable learning experience for one of the top programs out of Atlantic Canada.

14. Edge School (Calgary, Alberta)

Last Week Ranking: 14 Ranking Change: None League Record: 5-3 Overall Record: 5-6 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: Our Savior (NY) (65-58), Word of God (65-61)

Edge School may have came out of the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas with an 0-3 record, but every loss was decided by three or fewer possessions, to some of the best prep programs in the US. Edge may have stumbled a bit in 2018, but they have shown no quit in their play, and deserve to remain at the 14 spot.

15. Toronto Basketball Academy (Toronto, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking:16 Ranking Change: Up 1 League Record: 4-3 Overall Record: 9-7 Week 8 Wins: Woodstock Blue (CT) (74-73), Cheshire Academy (65-63), Bill Crothers (113-97) Week 8 Losses: None

All that needs to be said here is 70 points…. Amir Gholazadeh dropped 70 points on Bill Crothers to kick off week 8 action. TBA followed that up with a 2-0 performance at the Basketbull session in Massachusetts. All of this was enough to move TBA up a spot in the rankings.

16. GTA Prep (Brampton, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking:15 Ranking Change: Down 1 League Record: 5-5 Overall Record: 5-10 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None

GTA Prep is off until the New Year, until then, they secede a spot to TBA who went undefeated in week 8.

21. Saint Laurent (Montreal, Quebec)

Saint Laurent finished with a 1-2 record at the Sun Youth Holiday Classic. Their lack of size continues to limit their second chance opportunities, but this is still a team that can be dangerous when it plays their game, as we could see against RWI.

22. London Basketball Academy (London, Ontario)

Last Week Ranking: 22 Ranking Change: None  League Record: 2-2 Overall Record: 7-6 Week 8 Wins: None Week 8 Losses: None
