LOS ANGELES, CA– NPH entered basketball heaven flying into Los Angeles for Nike EYBL. The combination of California sunshine complimented with elite level basketball couldn’t get any better! Those in attendance were once again spoiled for the third session of the league. Headlining the weekend is Xavier Rathan-Mayes’ excellence, Dyshawn Pierre’s breakout performances and Olivier Hanlan’s game winner!

Canadian based teams Los Angeles Records (Overall league Record)

  • Cia Bounce- 5-0 (12-3)
  • Team Takeover DC- 5-0 (15-0)
  • The Family- 4-1 (8-7)
  • Albany City Rock- 2-3 (7-8)

The following is everything you need to know about Canada’s top prospects on the EYBL cicruit in Los Angeles:

Xavier Rathan-Mayes | 2014 | 6’4 | G | CIA BOUNCE | Undecided

We cannot say enough about “X” this past weekend at Nike EYBL Los Angeles! Whatever you read about Xavier in this evaluation will not do him justice as this youngster impressed on so many different levels…difficult to put into words. However, NPH will provide you with the best possible insider on this 2014 star. Rathan-Mayes has an outstanding feel for the game complimented with a high I.Q and an assassin’s mentality. He can score from anywhere on the floor and is improving in his passing game considerably. Due to CIA BOUNCE point guards Naz Long and Kevin Zabo not in attendance for LA, “X” experimented with the lead guard role and did a pretty decent job of it. He still produced significantly on offense, yet he was making an honest effort of getting his teammates involved. He was CLUTCH in several games, getting buckets when his team needed them and making plays. Rathan-Mayes informed NPH that he will strive to transition into a full time lead guard. If you are a coach or…

Dyshawn Pierre | 2012 | 6’6 | SF | CIA BOUNCE | Anderson CVI

This sleeper had himself a breakout performance in LA. Whether anyone noticed the quiet double-doubles he registered in limited minutes is another story. NPH is extremely high on this prospect and have been for over a year, witnessing great progress since he first displayed his dominance at last years Pitt Jam Fest. At the moment, Pierre is the designated “Glue guy” for CIA BOUNCE, a role that DP has proudly accepted. However, this prospect could provide much more than energy, rebounding and put back buckets when given a chance. Exhibit A: Pierre registered 12 points, 14 rebounds (9 offensive), 2 assist, 1 block and two steals in only 20 minutes against a strong BOO WILLIAMS team! CIA BOUNCE Head Coach, Mike George has progressively rewarded Pierre with added minutes as he continues to perform at a high level; expect Pierre’s role to increase moving forward. DP possesses a plethora of skills that he has yet to tap into on the EYBL circuit including great passing and…

Anthony Bennett | 2012 | 6’8 | CIA BOUNCE | Findlay Prep

Bennett has been the most consistent force for the current #7-ranked AAU team in North America. He does most of his damage on the wing off of passes which he finishes above the rim everytime. “Robo” is one of the most exciting players to watch in the EYBL as he combines brute strength with explosive hops! He didn’t have his shot going in Los Angeles but that didn’t matter as he continued to produce for his squad on penetration. Bennett definitely has the highest ceiling in 2012 and NPH is excited to track his development as he diversifies his game, and learns to utilize all his talent both on the interior and…

Olivier Hanlan | 2012 | 6’3 | G | Albany City Rock | New Hampton

Hanlan had various basketball personnel in attendance excited about what he can provide to a team—from media to college scouts, it was evident that he has solidified himself on the national radar (both Canada & US). Hanlan’s body structure is NCAA ready as his strength is an asset to his skills on both ends of the floor. He is able to easily shrug off defenders when attacking the cup while finishing plays despite contact. However, the intangible trait that is probably the most impressive about Hanlan is his composure. He is never rattled and carries himself with a quiet confidence. In the EYBL setting, this combo guard usually plays off the ball, however never shies away from the moment when his team needs him to handle the rock in clutch situations. On the contrary, Hanlan thrives in the clutch, which he displayed in the form of a game winning three point shot to seal a victory for Albany City Rock! Here is yet another Canadian that will rise in the 2012 NPH player rankings, coming soon!

Andrew Wiggins | 2014 | 6’7 | SG | CIA BOUNCE | Vaughan

The highly touted Wiggins struggled in his first three games in Los Angeles, lacking energy and looking out of sorts. Whether it was the jet lag or the sudden change in temperature, we are not sure, however what we can say is that he certainly picked it up in his last two games. His shot started to fall and his energy level increased, finishing in the lane and running the wing like a fox. By now, most NPH fans have learned about what Wiggins can provide; the youngster is reaching a boiling point but has not exploded yet. It is important to keep in mind his youth and raw ability, and with one more solid year of development, he will absolutely own high school basketball!

Junior Lomomba | 2012 | 6’5 | SG | The Family | James Madison

Lomomba displayed superior scoring ability in Dallas, producing off the dribble and squeezing into the gaps to make plays. However, in Los Angeles, this Quebecer impressed by showing that he can also play the facilitator role, dishing to teammates after establishing himself as an offensive threat. Lomomba’s patience was quite refreshing as he let the pace of each game dictate his approach, while not forcing anything. When taking into consideration his scoring touch, it is impressive to see how Lomomba can be efffective without having to fill the basket, rather by reacting to the defense with efficiency. On the downside, Lomomba still has room to improve defensively to become a solid presence on the wing. At 6’5, with decent length, there is no reason as to why Lomomba cannot become a good enough defender to hold his own at the next level.

Negus Webster-Chan | 2012 | 6’7 | G | CIA BOUNCE | Huntington Prep

NWC owns all the tools to become a special player including ball handling at 6’7, vision, strength and athleticism. However, he has not yet maximized his potential at this point, but still manages to contribute to his squad and get W’s. Webster-Chan would greatly benefit from asserting himself offensively and sustaining a good energy level throughout an entire game, as he disappears at times. With his senior year approaching, we hope that this cat can completely break out of his shell and become the impact player that he has the potential to be.

Jarryn Skeete | 2012 | 6’2 | PG | CIA BOUNCE | Undecided

Mr. Skeete has beeen a quiet assassin and played a major role in finishing out games for Bounce in addition to Rathan-Mayes’ heroics. Skeete has brought it down a notch in terms of his exciting passes (behind the back, no look) and has focused more on the basics. Although I would like to continue to see these entertaining dimes from him, he is gettin it done regardless. In addition, he shot the three ball at a very high rate and will always be a threat from distance, a great strength to have as a lead guard.

Jonathan Tshibuy | 2012 | 6’4 | Wing | Team Takeover DC | The Bullis School

Versatility. Team Takeover DC head coach Keith Stevens explained it perfectly; plain and simple. Tshibuy is called up for multiple services on a game to game basis. Whether guarding the oppononents top offensive player, helping facilitate the offense or doing the dirty work (diving for the bal, hitting the glass) Tshibuy does it all with efficiency. This Quebecer along with the rest of the Takeover DC squad aren’t at all concerned with rankings or media, and couldn’t care less about any negativity pointed their way by outsiders. Ultimately, all “The Punisher” cares about is W’s stating, “it’s a team game, when we win, everyone shines.” Tshibuy hit the nail on the head as his undefeated squad and EYBL defending champs have the target on their back. However, in terms of this prospect’s development moving forward, if he can shed at least 10 LBS. (currently 220) it would serve him well, adding speed on…

Sim Bhullar | 2012 | 7’5 | C | CIA BOUNCE | Huntington Prep

This 7’5 monstrousity was solid all week yet again. Bhullar has great hands, making all the tough catches and is a very good passer, usually creating opportunities for monster jams, courtesy of the beast, Anthony Bennett. Speaking of dunks, big Sim has built a repuation for going right through defenders with force, as if they are not present. In LA, he almost tore down the rim while creat a poster against Boo Williams. There are still several skills that he possesses that have not been displayed during EYBL, and he will need to receive more touches inside in order for him to operate. Once he learns to establish his interior game via hook shots and short jumpers, he will literally become unstoppable. At this point, he is still timid in terms of demanding the ball but needs to become more assertive. Bhullar is a great kid off the court as well, quiet and can be considered our typical “friendly giant.” As long as throws a mean streak on the hardwood, he will be dominant for years to come; the big man continues to impress.
